Balloon art is great for depicting monsters. There are so many possibilities... Big lips, crooked noses, toothless grins, blue and green faces...
I try to make them scary, but somehow they come out adorable instead...
I always tell my clients, "This one surely looks like someone you know ?" And I always get a cheerful, "Oh, Yes!!!!" I guess there are a lot of monsters out there...

Most classy brides wouldn't consider balloon art for their wedding. That is until they see some really fine balloon art.
Here is a balloon sculpture I twisted some time ago to commemorate a beautiful bride and groom on their wedding day. 
I usually give my balloon art a ten day life expectancy... and recommend taking a lot of photos for keepsakes. In this case, I was told that the sculpture was kept for six months!
Six months!! I can hardly believe that someone would keep a balloon sculpture for six months. By that time, the plum balloon bodies of groom and bride would turn into wrinkled mummies. It is just inflated and twisted balloons, for God Sake. They lose air; they oxidize and shrink into oblivion.
Balloon art is not designed to be kept forever. (It is too bad. Otherwise, by now I would spur some collector’s wars… wink, wink. )
Oh, well, what can I say? I hope the couple is just as passionate in keeping their marriage going for as long as possible.
Today I landed in a story on a Canadian newswire, CanWest: Corporate soirées shun the staid for kid-friendly fun. Shannon Proudfoot, who interviewed me for the story, says:
Irina Patterson, a Miami balloon artist who performs an annual gig at Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Club in Palm Beach and calls herself “the Russian Queen of Balloons,” believes the adult attraction to whimsical entertainment is more primal than that.
“Ordinary life is boring,” she says, likening the dearth of colourful entertainment in most people’s lives to a vitamin deficiency.
“Each toy or piece of art that I make is handmade, and these upscale customers appreciate it,” Patterson says. “It’s custom-made colourful toys for grown-up kids.”
Right on the money, Shannon. I am getting my skates ready. It's time to visit Canada. You get it right out there.
Come to think of it, a balloon artist constantly designs, manufactures and hand-delivers his balloon art toys. He tests and refines his designs every day until he comes up with a bestseller.
And, get this, he reads his customers response right there, in their eyes. There is no need to commission an expensive market study.

on delivery. A response that is hardly expected, but welcomed as a sign
and seal of ultimate market approval.
I had an investor approach me once, when he witnessed one of such feeding frenzies. “ If you can make them last," he said, "I want to invest in it."
I didn't have an answer for him at the time. Balloon art lasts for about 10 days and all it leaves behind is great memories.
But thinking back, the answer should have been something like this, "If you provide the business structure, I will design. A designer is someone who has a special relationship with shapes, colors and textures. As for the medium, it is interchangeable.”
I am captivated by balloon art. I understand its limitations; one of the most sorrowful is its fleetingly short life. But I can't break away from balloon art.
People often ask me if I create other forms of art. I understand. They are looking for some material objects of art that they can own.
In Miami, we have Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the world’s prestigious art shows. I often get suggestions that my balloon art should be exhibited in there. I am a big fan of Art Basel and looking forward to it this year, December 7-10.
But, sorry to say, I am not a part of any show. I am just not a part of any system that funnels into places like that.
I am flattered when people suggest that I should take on other art forms, but I do little to redirect my creative energies.
Partially, it is because I established myself as a balloon artist. I am a full time working balloon artist. It is the only source of my income and that takes a lot of my energy.
Another reason I stick with balloon art is that I am still fascinated by the process of twisting sculptures out of balloons.
I find it challenging and rewarding. It is rewarding in a way you would be pleased if you managed to solve a complex mathematical puzzle.
Here is one of my balloon art improvisations on sea life.
I never did these particular sculptures before. I didn't have a text book to study. It is a complete improvisation of mine.
When a client asked me to create sea life in balloon art, I thought, how beautiful.. Sea life is colorful and often translucent. There are limitless possibilities here.
That's what I mean when I say; I get inspired by a challenge to create something that I've never done before. That's what keeps me going in balloon art.
I am sure, in time, I will explore other art forms. But balloon art will always have a special place in my heart.

I noticed something that might not be so obvious. Some grown-ups enjoy balloon art more than kids. They see balloon art from an art perspective, not from a toy perspective.
Creative types, artists and architects, are particularly amused by intricate balloon art.
I enjoy doing events for grown-ups. I have a few grown-up events for the upcoming Halloween week and looking forward to it.

Flexible and colorful, latex balloons can be blown big and twisted into anything. Humorous approach works best.
Here is what one of my clients, a pharmaceutical executive, did during an important medical sales event.
She was selling a hemorrhoid cream. And, she asked me to twist two huge baboons with huge pink "swollen" behinds. She then strategically placed the baboons in her trade show booth.
Reportedly, those baboons stole the show, attracting her prospects like no other promotion ever did. People still talk to her about those baboons when she does her sales calls.

Last weekend we did an event for Target. It was a day of corporate branding at its best. We used only red and white balloons, Target's corporate colors, and placed Target’s logo everywhere. Kids and grown-ups went crazy over Target's Dog Spot, the balloon art version. It was see Spot run everywhere…
